Are Your Website Images Helping Your SEO?

We all know that good images can make a website look better. But did you know that the way you describe those images can also help your website?

That's where image alt tags come in.

What Is an Alt Tag?

An alt tag is a short description added to an image on your website. It tells search engines what the image shows and also provides a description for people who use screen readers.

For example, instead of:

Image: IMG_4587.jpg

A useful alt tag could be:

Alt text: Cape Town business owner working on a laptop

Simple, descriptive and useful.

Why Do Alt Tags Matter?

Google can't look at an image in quite the same way a person can. Alt text helps provide context about what the image represents and how it relates to the surrounding page content.

Good alt tags can also improve accessibility by helping visitors using screen readers understand your images.

Don't Stuff Keywords Into Them

Your alt text should describe the image naturally.

Don't write:

Cape Town website design SEO web design Cape Town SEO company

if the image simply shows someone working at a computer.

Instead, describe what's actually there.

Are Your Images Properly Optimised?

If you've never checked the images on your website, there may be plenty of opportunities to improve them.

At iTTConnect, we can help review your website's images, SEO and overall performance to make sure your website is working as effectively as possible.

Good images deserve good descriptions.
